Fort Santiago

It is located at the base of the Pasig River and was once the main defense fortress for the Spanish Government in the Philippines. José Rizal, the country's national hero, was imprisoned here before his execution in 1896. The Rizal Shrine is part of Fort Santiago and can be visited as well.

Also known as the "Shrine of Freedom", in memory of the heroic Filipinos imprisoned and killed here during the Spanish and Japanese eras.
